ABSTRACT Given the important privacy with security risks posed by Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, it seems desirable to encourage customers to buy safer devices and consider privacy when making purchasing decisions. A mixed methods approach is used to examine the effect of security and privacy on IoT device purchase behavior and assess whether these effects are sensitive to framing. In the first part of the study, we tested a causal model with choice models that were developed based on stated choice data to quantify the effect of security and privacy compared to other decision attributes such as price or functionality. With the help of a qualitative survey, the second part will reveal the mechanisms that explain how privacy and security affect purchase behavior. Under the conditions that security- and privacy-related information is available and communicated in an understandable manner, allowing consumers to compare devices, the results indicate that privacy and security can strongly influence purchase behavior. Moreover, consumers are more likely to consider buying a secure device if the description of security centers on gains. Consumers can use the results of the study to influence their purchases of more secure and privacy-friendly devices.
