Title

A CASE REPORT ON AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS)

Abstract

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine abnormality affecting reproductive aged women, resulting from insulin resistance and the compensatory hyperinsulinemia. Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Ovarian axis dysfunction that leads to increased GnRH secretion and LH pulse frequency which results in increased LH secretion but normal to low FSH secretion. Raised LH causes hyperplasia of ovarian stroma and thecal cells producing androgens. This results in adverse effect on multiple organ systems and may result in alteration in serum lipids, anovulation, abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility. Ayurveda is ancient, well documented Indian system of medicine giving promising results in the management of PCOS. A female patient aged 21 years was very anxious for conception attended the OPD with complaints of irregular cycles, weight gain, lethargy and loss of libido from last 1&1/2 years. USG had shown bilateral polycystic ovaries, large cyst in left ovary, Grade I-II fatty liver. This article presents a successfully managed case of PCOS by Ayurvedic treatment which is presented in the form of a case study. A treatment protocol containing, AmrutottaramKashayam,DadimadiGhritam, RajahpravartiniVati, was planned for a period of 2 months followed by YogaBasti for 1 cycle. Post treatment patient conceived twice naturally. The results revealed that, subfertility due to PCOS can be cured successfully by using this Ayurveda treatment regimen.
