Title

CHARACTERIZATION AND SYNTHESIS OF BIOFILM FROM IPOMOEA BATATAS AND CITRUS HYSTRIX WITH COCOS NUCIFERA EXTRACT

Abstract

Plastics have become an integral part of our daily lives. Environmental pollution due to plastic waste has become a global problem. Biodegradable plastics manufacturing is needed to exchange conventional plastics. Plastics are materials formed by polymers and additives. Starch is a well-known organic polymer. This research work deals with incorporating the sweet potato starch and kaffir lime powder with coconut husk fiber to make biodegradable plastic by using glycerol and castor oil as an organic plasticizer. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Biotechnology, Vivekananda college of engineering for women(autonomous) during 2021-22. The experiments aimed to prepare biodegradable plastic from renewable sources as starch that would be environment-friendly. Development of biofilm was carried out 5gms of starch, 3gms of kaffir lime powder, 1.5gms of coconut husk fiber, whereas 100ml of distilled water, 4ml of vinegar, 5ml of glycerol, and a few drops of castor oil were kept constant throughout the experiment. The films were prepared by the casting technique using a film-forming solution. The results on biodegradable film were analyzed.
