Arts, Science and Commerce are three fundamental academic streams in West Bengal. As a branch of knowledge; Commerce education imparts the experience of the corporate world. The Commerce stream was quite a popular one in West Bengal education during 70s, 80s and even in 90s.The brilliant students of this stream could hope prestigious positions in banks, audit & account services and in Corporate sectors also. Since late 90s the fate of commerce education has started glooming specially in rural colleges in West Bengal. The commerce students learn many subjects but get no specialization as per available job specification, Unpopularity of commerce at competitive examinations, content oriented rather than skill and practice oriented syllabus. These problems need serious attention and close scrutiny. The growing phenomenon of privatization, globalization and liberalization has a great impact on the Commerce education. It is high time for soul searching for an objective appraisal which will provide the basis for evolving a new strategy for giving a better deal to commerce education in the years to come. This paper attempts to highlight the problems of commerce education in West Bengal and how to overcome the problems.
