Title

ANTIOXIDANT PROFILES OF COMMONLY CONSUMED FLOWERS HERBAL TEA AND STUDY OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY, PREBIOTIC ACTIVITY, AND EXTRACTION OF EPIGALLOCATECHIN GALLATE

Abstract

Since ancient times tea is the most popular beverage and also considered a medicative drink, but recently it has received a great deal of attention due to its antioxidant properties. Along with this antioxidant property of black and green tea it has high caffeine content due to that people shifted to herbal tea which is caffeine-free tea. Flower herbal tea is widely consumed as a sole beverage or as an additive due to its antioxidant and nutritional properties. Six flowers of herbal tea Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Rosa indica, Clitoria ternatea (Blue & White variety), Chrysanthemum morifolium, Gomphrena globose were studied for their antioxidant compounds, antimicrobial activity, prebiotic activity, and EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is extracted from Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Rosa indica, Clitoria ternatea (Blue & White variety). Various antioxidant compounds are estimated by determining Total Polyphenol Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), Total Proanthocyanidin Content, Total Catechin Content, Total Anthocyanin Content, And Vitamin C using folin-ciocalteu method, aluminium chloride method, vanillin-HCl method, vanillin-H2SO4 assay, pH differential method, iodometric titration respectively and antioxidant activity determined by two method phosphomolybdate method also known as TAC, ferric reducing antioxidant capacity (FRAC). Antimicrobial activity was determined by the agar well diffusion method. In this study, Rosa indica contains the highest antioxidant compounds followed by Clitoria ternatea (Blue Flowers) and Clitoria ternatea (White Flowers), and among all flower extracts Rosa indica possesses great antimicrobial and prebiotic potency. As rich sources of antioxidant and antimicrobial and prebiotic activity, Rosa indica could be considered a good healthy beverage and also a caffeine-free alternative to green tea.
