Extended release dosage forms cover a wide range of prolonged action preparations that provide continuous release of their active ingredients for a specific period of time. Metformin Hcl is ant hyperglycemic agent used in the treatment of type 2 Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. The extended release formulation of Metformin Hcl (MER), prolongs drug absorption in the upper gastrointestinal tract and permits once daily dosing in patient with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus .This newer formulation may enhance patient compliance with oral therapy compared to conventional immediate release (MIR) Metformin Hcl in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Extended release formulation of Metformin Hcl presents significant challenges due to its poor inherent compressibility, high dose and high water solubility.
