Title

AN OPEN LABLE, NON CONTROLLED CLINICAL STUDY TO EVALUATE EFFICACY AND SAFTEY OF AYURVEDIC TREATMENT PROTOCOL FOR IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Abstract

ABSTRACT Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder that is characterized by abdominal pain and an altered defecation pattern. The pathogenesis of IBS is poorly understood, although roles for abnormal gut motor and sensory activity, central neural dysfunction, psychological disturbances, stress, and luminal factors have been proposed. It affects between 5 and 20% of the general population and can seriously impact quality of life. It is mainly diagnosed by its symptoms as there are no proper diagnostic markers for diagnosis. The etiology and pathophysiology is not clear, but there are some researches which prove the role of abnormality of intestines and impaired communication of Enteric Nervous System which plays main role in manifestation of the disease. In Ayurveda IBS cannot be compared with any single disease. But many diseases described in Ayurveda like Grahani, Atisara and Pravahika have some similarities with the disease. In this clinical study an effort was made to treat 27 patients having symptoms of Muhurbaddha Muhurshithil (episode of constipated and loose stools), Apakwa Malapravritti (Stool with mucus), Udarshool (abdominal pain). Patient treated with specially designed Ayurveda treatment protocol which consists oral medications like, Hingvastak Churna, Shankh Vati, Sarsvat Churna and Panchamruta Parpati and disease specific Pathyapathya. At the end of 28 days of treatment patient got significant improvement in episode of chronic or recurrent abdominal pain(84.32%), distension of abdomen (77.44%), constipation(80%), Diarrhea(69.62%), Passage of mucous (73.43%).
