Title

RESEARCH ARTICLE ON ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECT OF METHANOL EXTRACT OF AMARYLLIS BELLADONNA ON PHAMACOLOGICAL MODELS OF DEPRESSION

Abstract

ABSTRACT: To study the antidepressant effect of Methanol extract of Amaryllis belladonna bulbs in wistar rats. Methanol extract of Amaryllis belladonna bulbs was prepared by a method of Soxhlet apparatus. The extract was subjected to phytochemical screening supersede by acute oral toxicity studies in rats. Methanol extract of Amaryllis belladonna bulbs in the doses of 100 and 200mg/kg body weight was administered to test groups 1 and 2 respectively. Imipramine hydrochloride 30mg/kg body weight was administered to standard group by oral route. Control group received normal saline 10 mg/kg body weight. Antidepressant effect was evaluated by using modified Forced Swimming Test (FST) and Tail Suspension Test (TST). Duration of immobility was observed in both the models which was evidential of antidepressant activity. Standard statistical methods were used to evaluate results. The results exhibit significant dose dependent antidepressant effect of Methanol extract of Amaryllis belladonna bulbs in wistar rats for both the models in test groups (1 and 2). Methanol extract of Amaryllis belladonna bulbs exhibit convincing antidepressant activity. On the other hand, further delving are recommended to determine its active constituents and molecular level of target mechanism of the extract for further use in humans.
