Title

Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO Incorporated PVA Nanocomposite Films for UV Shielding Applications

Abstract

The effect of incorporation of Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on morphological, spectroscopic, and thermal properties of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films was carried out using XRD, SEM, UV-Visible spectroscopy, and DSC characterization techniques. In this study, different weight percentages (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) of ZnO nanoparticles were incorporated in PVA using the solution casting technique. The studies of XRD shows that ZnO nanoparticle structure remains the same even in the PVA matrix, and there is an increase in the crystallinity of the ZnO-PVA film. From the SEM images, it can be observed that the ZnO NPs were uniformly distributed on the film surface. The absorption edge, direct bandgap, indirect bandgap, and Urbach energy values were evaluated from the UV-Visible studies. The loading of 0 to 8.0 wt.% of ZnO NPs in PVA resulted in significant changes in direct bandgap from 6.16 eV to 5.54 eV, indirect bandgap from 5.88 eV to 5.09 eV, and Urbach energy from 0.428 eV to 0.538 eV. ZnO-PVA film spectroscopic results showed their properties were modified considerably with small loadings of ZnO NPs due to cross-linking formation between the ZnO NPs and the PVA polymer. From the DSC results, it is observed that there were no changes in the glass transition temperatures and the melting points of the ZnO-PVA composite films with increasing the ZnO NPs weight percentage.
