The condition of women in India saw a drastic change in various periods of history. Over a period of time, several changes had been made to improve the condition of women. Various acts had been passed and incorporated into the present day Constitution of India to uplift the women and to provide them equal opportunities to that of men in every field of life. The present paper focuses on the historical background of some of the acts meant for women during British period, Social Legislations before Independence and after Independence and the Constitutional provisions made for the emancipation of women.
