Abstract

AN ANALYTICAL STUDY ON CULTURAL TOURISM POTENTIALITY OF ASSAM STATE -Dr.K.V.S.NARENDAR ABSTRACT Tourism today is one of the world’s fastest growing and oldest industries. With the advent of industrialization people started moving in large numbers to places away from their usual places of residence and work with a view to seek change. This trend continued until tourism became a great mass phenomenon. This phenomenon is a visible result of the great technological developments which have changed the social geography of the world since the nineteenth century. According to World Tourism Organization (WTO) statistics, the tourism industry will continue to grow from strength to strength. From 70 million international tourist movements in the year 1960. It is further estimated by World Tourism Organization that international tourist arrivals worldwide would reach 1.5 billion by the year 2020. A significant geographical aspect of Assam is that it contains three of six physiographic divisions of India – The Northern Himalayas (Eastern Hills), The Northern Plains (Brahmaputra plain) and Deccan Plateau (Karbi Anglong). As the Brahmaputra flows in Assam the climate here is cold and there is rainfall most of the month. Geomorphic studies conclude that the Brahmaputra, the life-line of Assam, Assamese Culture is traditionally a hybrid one developed due to assimilation of ethno-cultural groups of Austric, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman and Tai origin in the past. The Assamese people observe all the pan-Indian religious festivals, but their most important celebrations are the three Bihu festivals. Originally agricultural festivals, they are observed with great enthusiasm irrespective of caste, creed, and religious affinity.
