Title

A Study of the Women Protagonists in Kate Chopin’s Select Short Stories from a Feminist Point of View

Authors

Abstract

Kate Chopin, a 19th century American writer shot to fame after her novels got published after her death. Her short stories, along with her novels earned her a place in American Literature as she had sown the seeds of feminist consciousness. Her short stories revolved around women who belonged to the South. Like Tennessee Williams, Kate Chopin has brought to light the struggles experienced by women at home and in society, with a regional background. Being a woman of revolutionary temper she exposes the oppressed condition of women while focusing on their desires, sexuality, perceptions, freedom, racial discrimination and identity. Despite their submissive state in a patriarchal society, some of her women protagonists have shown defiance while others accept their fate. The most noteworthy feature of Chopin’s short stories is that they have an ambiguous ending. She allows the readers to guess the ending, according to their own perceptions and viewpoints. Though she gives it all a local colour, the characters and themes acquire universal significance. The short stories selected for analysis throw light on various aspects of the thinking of women. Kate Chopin is not acknowledged as a feminist. Yet her writings show a slant towards this consciousness. She belongs to a class of proto-feminists.
