Title

A Literatures Based Study on Ancient Methodology of Cadaver Preservation According to Acharya Sushruta

Abstract

The early civilization that invented embalming. There aren't many traces of the old Indian culture left in the Hindu mythological and ayurvedic Samhitas and granthas. Ayurvedic Classics in Shushruta Samhita explain corpse preservation and as early as first offer the notion of preservation of cadaver and selection of cadaver, while the Ramayana chapter Ayodhya Kanda mentions evidence of body preservation from approximately 5000 BC. Long before early Indian doctors started dissecting cadavers to study the human body, there existed a need for preservation. Additionally, the Ancient Egyptians believed that mummy preservation provided the afterlife vigour to the spirit, enabling it to return to the preserved body. The Ancient Egyptians (3200 BC) thought that a mummy's preservation gave the soul after death more strength. Arsenic was commonly employed as an embalming fluid in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but other more potent and safe compounds have since taken its place.
