Title

Experimental Investigation on the Strength of Concrete using Recycled Aggregates as a Structural Material

Abstract

The higher rate of urbanization globally leads to rapid development of infrastructure and which in turn demands the increased use of raw materials for construction activities. As it is known that Natural aggregates is one of the primary raw material in RCC works in large quantity, on the other hand causes environmental degradation as construction and demolition waste. The material waste generated from the buildings which are subjected to demolition after its service life are generally dumped as landfills. These concrete debris cause environmental hazards as well as considered as of no use. But these aggregates when properly recycled and processed can be used as potential raw material in fresh concrete. Many researchers stated that recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) are only suitable for non-structural concrete application. This research, however, shows that the recycled aggregates that are obtained from concrete specimen make good quality concrete. This paper experimentally demonstrated the workability and strength parameters of prepared concrete samples with different percentage of aggregates. Compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength of prepared concrete samples are analyzed and 25% replacement of natural aggregate with RCA gives satisfactory results as of fresh concrete.

Key Words

Recycled aggregate, concrete utilizing recycled aggregate, construction and demolition waste.
