Title

A STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE REGADING PUBERTAL CHANGES AMONG PRE-ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN SELECTED SR. SECONDARY SCHOOL IN JEOLIKOTE

Abstract

Background: Pre-Adolescent period including the girls from 8-13 years old. In this periods the girls having physical, mental and emotional changes and increase general body growth and development of secondary sexual characters and sex organs. Puberty means age of manhood. It refers to the physical rather than behavioral changes which occurs when girls become sexually mature. Puberty occurs in a girl at the end of the pre-adolescent periods. This is the age of first menstruation start because of activation of the ovaries by the gonadotropins of the anterior pituitary .the first time menstruation is called ‘menarche’. The changes are mood swings, rebellious behavior and development of individual traits habits and hobbies are all part of an adolescent growth and development. According to survey conducted by the federation of Obstetrics and Gynecologists Society of Indian, the age of attaining sexual maturity among girls in urban Indian has dropped from 13 to 11 years. More than 80% of the girls in cities are reaching puberty around age 11 years. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge regarding pubertal changes among pre-adolescent girls in selected Sr. Secondary School in Jeolikote. Design: An experimental research design was adopted for the study. Setting: The present study was conducted in Sr. Secondary School Jeolikote, Uttrakhand. Method: Data was collected by using self-structured knowledge questionnaire on knowledge regarding pubertal changes among pre-adolescent girls. The tool was developed in two parts, demographic variables and the second part knowledge questions on pubertal changes. Collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The study revealed that there were 23(46%) in the age group of (10-11 years). The education level among them is 23(46%) in majority. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 26(52%) from joint family. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 43(86%) were Hindus. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 24(48%) were in age of menarche. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 31(62%) were belonging from middle class. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 24(46%) parents studied at high school. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 27(54%) sources of information were teachers. The majority of pre-adolescent girls 30(60%) were vegetarian. The present study revealed that the mean for pre-test is 10.06 with the mean% of 20.12% and Standard deviation of 2.45. The present study revealed that the mean value of pre-adolescent for post-test is 12.04 with mean% (24.08%) and Standard deviation is 1.96 after the structured teaching program. Analysis revealed that there is non-significant association between all the variables. Conclusion: The study concluded that structured teaching programme was effective in increasing the knowledge regarding pubertal changes among pre-adolescent girls in selected Sr. Secondary School in Jeolikote.
