Title

CHECKLIST OF AVIFAUNAL DIVERSITY AT FEW PONDS OF ARSIKERE TALUK OF HASSAN DISTRICT OF KARNATAKA, INDIA

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Arsikere (1301815211N to 7601512511E) is called ‘Kalpataru nadu’ due to more coconut production in Hassan District of Karnataka. It lies at an average elevation of 807m msl and experiencing semi-arid climate suitable for various species of bird’s inhabitation at diversified agro-ecosystems. Systematic field investigations was made to record the avifaunal diversity at few ponds amidst Arsikere by following standard methods during the year 2021. Total 39 bird species were recorded at different ponds. The density, abundance, per cent frequency and diversity indices of these bird species indicated significant variation existed among the ponds. Interestingly, few migratory bird species were sited at the vicinity of ponds with their sub-adult forms. Moreover, prevailed environmental conditions amidst various ponds supported both local resident and migratory bird species during different months. Thus, ponds located amidst semi-arid region of Arsikere are hosting different bird species which offer specific habitat conditions for their normal survival. Unfortunately, many bird species are facing threat due to various anthropogenic activities and prevailed local inclement weather during various months impacted the bird species density. Many bird species are experiencing threat and become vulnerable to the unsuitable breeding grounds and nesting sites during their stay at these ponds. Therefore, on this line, further in depth studies are necessitated and results of such observations will be presented elsewhere. However, present study through an insight on local avifauna of two ponds located amidst semi-arid region of Arsikere. The data generated from the present study would help develop inventory of locally existing avifaunal diversity and their distribution during different months/seasons to earmark breeding and nesting habitats. Using this scientific information it may be possible to develop suitable mitigation measures to save local avifaunal diversity.

Key Words
