Title

ANALYSIS OF HARD TURNED SURFACE MICROSTRUCTURE USING DEFORM SOFTWARE

Abstract

Surface integrity is a major concern in industry to implement hard turning for bearing steel components due to the fatigue life. A finite element analysis approach is carried out to simulate the orthogonal machining process using a commercially available software DEFORM SOFTWARE (2D & 3D). This research work exposes how various parameters of like cutting speed, depth of cut, & feed rate of an uncoated carbide cutting insert affects the tool wear, cutting forces acting and heat generated at the tool chip interface. Hence the analysis of surface microstructure will certainly help to avoid formation of white layer in hard turning. User defined subroutines to investigate the surface microstructure for AISI 1045 steel. Predict the critical surface micro structural attributes such as temperature, grain size, damage, velocity, displacement and stress during hard turning. A validation simulation analysis is carried out with the modeled optimum cutting tool and an optimum cutting speed, feed rate & depth of cut is obtained.
