Ransomware is an issue that is becoming more and more relevant as companies start relying more in their IT structures. Various institutions such as academic, medical, financial, and government have been targeted. Ransomware has wreaked havoc on businesses and recently there has been emergence of a new form called Ransomware as a Service (RaaS). RaaS allows cyber-criminals without the skills to write their own ransomware to deploy a "rented" version. RaaS is at-least as advanced if not more advanced than the most sophisticated regular ransomware. Several possible mitigation techniques are proposed to reduce the impact of RaaS. RaaS is moving towards using more advanced encryption techniques and making the ransomware more configurable. RaaS has moved towards a model that is able to encrypt systems independent from Command & Control servers. Cybercriminals are constantly exploring different approaches like social engineering attacks, such as phishing attacks, to spread ransomware. Hence, in this paper, we explored recent advances in ransomware, ransomware-as-a-service, prevention and detection techniques and future directions.
