Title

A SINGLE PHASE SEVEN- LEVEL INVERTER WITH SWITCHED- CAPACITOR CELL FOR TRANSFORMERLESS GRID- TIED PV APPLICATIONS

Abstract

In the past decades, the concern about climate change and the rising oil prices have triggered the development of alternative power sources. Photovoltaic (PV) generation systems are particularly attractive due to their advantages such as noiseless operation, relatively small size, reliability, and emission- free. Acquiring higher efficiency with re- duction of size, weight, and cost are the reasons that make transformerless inverters more appealing compared to ones including transformers, especially in grid-tied applications. However, the transformerless inverter suffers from the flowing of the leakage current through the parasitic capacitors which form between the PV array and the grounded frame. To improve the output voltage waveform, multi- level topologies offer more than two voltage levels. A novel seven- level transformerless switched-capacitor inverter with reduced output harmonic content for PV systems is proposed. Through the use of the SC cell and the CG connection of active and passive used elements, not only is the number of output voltage levels enhanced by up to seven but also a three times voltage boosting feature with a single-stage operation as well as the elimination of the leakage current is acquired. The performance study of the seven-level transformerless switched-capacitor inverter is carried out using Matlab/Simulink for an output power of 1.2kW. The output voltage of the inverter with seven-level is obtained as 360.2V RMS for an input voltage of 180V with THD 21.76% and efficiency of 89% . A 5V prototype of five- level transformerless switched-capacitor inverter is implemented using the dSPACE DS1104 controller.
