Title

Antimicrobial activity of the mossextracts(Bryophyte) of Homaliodendron flabellatum(Sm)-M.Fleisch and Hypopterygium tamarisci(Sw) Brid.ex.Mull.Hal.

Abstract

This study was carried out with an objective to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of the plants Homaliodendron flabellatum and Hypopterygium tamarisci. In the present study the antimicrobial activity of the ethanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform and acetone extracts were evaluated for potential antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal strains. The antimicrobial activity was determined in the extracts using disc diffusion method. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of extracts of Homaliodendron flabellatum and Hypopterygium tamarisci were tested against two Gram positive(Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus lentus) and two Gram negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) human Pathogenic bacteria and three fungal strains such asCandida albicans,Aspergillus flavus and Mucor recemosus. The zone of inhibition of extracts were compared with standard antibiotic drug Gentamycin for antibacterial activity and Nystatin for antifungal activity. The results showed that the remarkable inhibition of the bacterial growth was shown against the tested organisms. The antimicrobial activity of the Homaliodendronflabellatum and Hypopterygium tamarisci were due to the presence of various secondary metabolites. Hence these plants can be used to discover bioactive natural products that may serve as leads in the development of new pharmaceuticals research activities.
