Title

Impact of Proficiency Level and Gender on the Performance of Metacognitive Reading Strategies in ESL/EFL learners

Abstract

Metacognition refers to awareness of one’s knowledge, what one does and does not know, and one’s ability to understand, control, and manipulate cognitive processes. It includes learning when and where to use specific procedures for learning and critical thinking and how and why to use particular methods. This study investigated the impact of proficiency level and gender on the performance of metacognitive reading strategies in ESL/EFL learners. Primary data was collected from 270 students studying in schools in Mysore using a questionnaire. An Independent sample test revealed no relationship between gender and proficiency level of ESL/EFL learners and their performance in metacognitive reading strategies.
