Title

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ITS IMPACT ON EMPLOYEE EFFECTIVENESS IN IT INDUSTRY AT COIMBATORE

Abstract

Years ago, Intelligence Quotient (IQ) was vital in both private and public sectors. Despite all qualifications, diplomas, and degrees holders being employed in their particular field, work performance was not well structured and not always successful as executives could not cope with high pressure and stress, so workers are not able to attain high level of maintenance. Employees are having problems such as health, financial and are bored with their specific task leading to absences. This is so, as a lot of pressures are being exerted on employees like stress, team pressure, misunderstanding between colleagues, no profit in the company, bad communication skills and sharing among executives and also the manager. However, to overcome obstacles of competitiveness, EI is the best solution to adopt in favor of both the employees and the organization. Even during the period of pandemic (COVID-19) the way employees work, learn, worship and socialize has been altered. So resisting the temptation to engage in face to face social connection is not easy. Breaking ties with social groups can make one feel lonely, which can in turn increase the likelihood of depression, high blood pressure and death from heart disease. As a result, many in lockdown experienced what psychologists refer to as “cognitive dissonance” which occurs in situations when people experience mental discomfort for having opposing thoughts and feelings. In moments of crisis, studies suggest that a shared sense of “we-feeling”, or a mutual emotional connection with others, is paramount for motivating mass pro-social action. Feelings of closeness can lead to a shared affinity and concern for the welfare of others. Thus people who feel a part of a cohesive community can form a powerful shared identity with each other by serving those in needs. The managers and executives, who can alter their emotions in an efficient way, are more successful on job. Therefore, to alleviate this situation, Emotional Intelligence became the crucial point of view in organizations as EI will help workers to manage stress, control self emotions and pressures, to keep a positive spirit and to ensure a good performance even while facing work complications. Hence an attempt has been made to conduct research on “EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND IT’S IMPACT ON EMPLOYEE EFFECTIVENESS IN IT INDUSTRY AT COIMBATORE.” The study is to understand emotional intelligence of IT employees and how they are able to manage their emotions in certain environment in the organizations. The study also covers various aspects about their social awareness, relationship management, stress. The data is collected only from IT sector. This study aims in finding out the influence of emotional intelligence on organizational effectiveness and its impact on employee effectiveness. Further the study focuses on understanding the challenges faced by them. It has also highlighted the needed suggestion for further improvements. 500 employees were selected through purposive sampling method and were divided into four sectors to elicit the information. Various statistical tools like T-Test, ANOVA, Garrett Ranking, Confirmatory factor analysis along with Structural Equation model were deployed to answer the research question and objective. It was found out that those who have high EI were able to cope up with stress and in turn were effective to changes occurring in the environment.
