ROLE OF PALEA AND LEMMA IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CARYOPSIS OF Oryza sativa Linn. (POACEAE).

Abstract
Palea and lemma form the fertile glumes of Oryza sativa Linn. (POACEAE) spikelet which are supposed to be essential components that co-ordinate normal growth of its caryopsis. Besides supplying assimilates they may provide a critical environment required for the development of caryopsis. The density of stomata on the outer surface of spikelet is less than 100/cm2, and the stomata are restricted to marginal cores of lemma. Size of the caryopsis is limited by space available within palea and lemma.
