Title

A PRE-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE STRUCTURE TEACHING PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING TRACHEOSTOMY CARE AMONG STAFF NURSES WORKING IN SELECTED HOSPITALS AT DISTRICT SANGRUR , PUNJAB

Abstract

The trachea bifurcates in to the right and left main stem bronchi at a point called carina. the carina is located at the level of the manubriosternal junction, also called angle of Louis. The carina is highly sensitive and touching it during suctioning causes vigorous coughing. The primary purpose of the respiratory system is gas exchange, which involves the transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and blood the respiratory system is divided into two parts: the upper respiratory tract starts from the nose and ends in trachea. The trachea or windpipe is about five inches (10-12 cm) long. The support of U shaped cartilage keeps the trachea open but allows adjacent esophagus to expand for swallowing. Tracheostomy is probably the common surgical procedure performed on critical ill patient approximately 10% of mechanically ventilator critically ill patient under tracheostomy to facilitate prolonged airway and ventilator support. The nurse often makes an independent decision about the care the patient needs based on what the nurse knows about that patient and the problems that may occur.
