A PORTRAYAL OF CONTEMPORARY POLITICS IN SASHI THAROOR’S INDIA: FROM MIDNIGHT TO THE MILLENNIUM

Authors

Abstract

Shashi Tharoor, in his non-fictional work, India: From Midnight to the Millennium, representing India’s politics and the system of politics that determine Indian democracy; this text depicts a history of post-independent and postmodern India. He throws light on the culture of politics in independent India. Tharoor discusses the mile stone decisions and happenings during these fifty years. He makes a commendable and personalized evaluation of the contemporary India juxtaposing the pre-independent India with the post - independent India. He evaluates the past fifty years and also the challenges that India will face in the near future; for this, he thinks about the forces that have formed modern India and also on those forces that are going to shape the impression of India’s future. Tharoor gives a broad survey of the Prime Ministers of India in this book; he tracks down the legacy of Nehru and Gandhi sovereignty, being in the driving seat of the Congress Party. After discussing the problems of caste, religion, communal politics, and corruption, Tharoor draws our attention towards Non-Resident Indian (NRI), who have got name, fame and wealth in the other lands; they are economically very strong now and can help their motherland to overcome the financial confrontation. Tharoor described the economic policy of India and the important role played by the Indian government in the discharge of the developmental policies. He steadily believes that in the coming century, India, amidst all the global odds and ends, will resist democracy with all its freeness, tolerance and freedom.
