Halitosis also known as Bad breath, is the most common complain of individual reporting to the dental practitioners. It can result in anxiety among the individuals affected. The halitosis is mainly divided into true and false type. Etiology of halitosis is multifactorial however the 90% of cases have oral origin and only 10% cases have extraoral etiology. Mainly volatile sulphur compounds are responsible for intraoral halitosis. Prevalence of halitosis is reported from 5% to 75% in reported cases. Various manual as well as advanced techniques are available for the diagnosis of halitosis. The treatment depends on the underlying cause. Management may include simple measures such as scaling and root planing, instructions for oral hygiene, tongue cleaning, and mouth rinsing. The aim of this review was to describe the etiological factors, prevalence, diagnosis and the management of halitosis.
