Title

“Preclinical Evaluation of Anti-inflammatory potential of Amorphophalluspaeoniifolius”

Abstract

Inflammation is rapid response to injury or microbes and other foreign substance that is designed to deliver leukocytes and plasma proteins to sites of injury. It is a body defence mechanism in order to eliminate or limit the spread of injurious agent as well as to remove the necrosed cells and tissues.Inflammation has been rightly termed as modern day epidemic and the outbreak of numerous side effects of synthetic drugs have increased the need for the use of herbal alternative for treatment of inflammation and its associated disorders.Amorphophalluspaeoniifolius Linn, known as Suran is a well-known plant in the Indian traditional system of medicine and distributed throughout India. The survey of literature reveals that the Amorphophalluspaeoniifolius tubers are found to be used in the traditional system of medicine as anti-inflammatory.However, anti-inflammatory activity of Amorphophalluspaeoniifoliushas not been scientifically investigated. In present work, methanolic extract of Amorphophalluspaeoniifolius was analysed for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. The extract was tested into three different strength of doses (100, 200 and 400 mg/Kg) on the animal model i.e. tail immersion method, hot plate method and carrageenan induced paw oedema. The different doses exhibited that the drug was well efficacious and the effectivity was dose dependent. The drug was compared using a standard is Ketoprofen which is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and control group. In conclusion, these observations provide a preclinical evidence for the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity and the herbal drug extract was found to be efficacious.
