‘samasthans’ were the big military chief controlling authorities who had established their authority over large territories; during the pre-Qutb Shahi’s rule they were known as ‘Pulgars’ and under the kings of Golconda and Bijapur as ‘Makaradars’ but since the beginning of the Asaf Jahi rule (1724-1948 C.E.) they were styled as ‘Samasthans’. The Hindu Rajas of these ‘Samasthans’ paid revenue and gave military assistants to the Asaf Jahi rulers. These Hindu Raja of the Samasthans like Wanaparthy Gadwal and Sholapur maintained a few artists. While painting in the Deccan was developed at Hyderabad, the closer relations and frequent visits of these Rajas to the state capital, Hyderabad led to further rewards, for these Rajas also engaged some painters.
