Title

Comparative Analysis of Emotional, Aggressive, and Anxiety Levels in Team versus Individual Sports Players

Abstract

Understanding the psychological states of athletes is pivotal in optimizing their performance and overall well-being. This study examines the comparative emotional regulation strategies, aggression levels, and anxiety trends among team and individual sports players. Using validated tools such as the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ), and Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), data was collected from 100 athletes aged 18-30 years, equally distributed between the two categories. Results revealed that team players predominantly employed cognitive reappraisal strategies for emotional regulation, while individual players leaned towards emotional suppression. Instrumental aggression was notably higher among team players, attributed to their competitive dynamics, whereas individual players exhibited elevated levels of hostile aggression. Anxiety levels also showed significant differences; individual players reported higher trait anxiety (p < 0.05), whereas team players demonstrated lower state anxiety during competitions, benefiting from collective support mechanisms. These findings underscore the psychological distinctions between team and individual sports, emphasizing the need for tailored mental conditioning programs to enhance athlete performance and resilience. The study contributes to sports psychology literature, offering practical insights for coaches and sports psychologists to develop athlete-specific interventions.
