Title

Analytical Comparative Study on Sexual Harassment Among Basketball Athletes: Prevalence, Impact, and Mitigation Strategies

Abstract

Sexual harassment remains a pervasive issue across various sectors, including sports, where power dynamics and close interpersonal interactions increase vulnerability. This study provides an analytical comparative investigation into the prevalence, impacts, and mitigation strategies for sexual harassment among basketball athletes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys and interviews with 200 basketball players (100 male and 100 female) across amateur and professional levels. Quantitative data revealed significant gender disparities, with 65% of female athletes and 30% of male athletes reporting experiences of sexual harassment during their careers. Regression analysis demonstrated a negative correlation (R = -0.65, p < 0.01) between harassment experiences and performance, highlighting psychological impacts such as anxiety and loss of focus. Thematic analysis of qualitative data identified barriers to reporting, including fear of retaliation and unawareness of anti-harassment policies. Policy gaps were evident in institutional frameworks, with many athletes expressing the need for enhanced preventive measures. The findings underscore the urgent need for gender-sensitive interventions, robust reporting mechanisms, and widespread policy reform to ensure safer environments in sports. This study contributes to existing literature by addressing gaps in basketball-specific contexts and offering actionable insights for stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, and policymakers.
