Title

PERFORMANCE OF PANCHAYAT WISE YOUNG MUKHIYA CANDIDATES OF SULTANGANJ BLOCK

Abstract

In the 2021 Bihar Panchayat elections, there was a notable shift in voter behavior, with a significant number of incumbent mukhiyas (village heads) being replaced by new candidates, many of whom were young. In the first phase of the elections, approximately 80% of incumbent mukhiya’s were not re-elected, indicating a strong preference for new leadership. This trend was observed across various districts, including Sultanganj block. While specific data on the performance of young mukhiya candidates in Sultanganj block is limited, the overall pattern suggests that younger candidates were favored by voters seeking change and development. For instance, in Bhagalpur district, which includes Sultanganj block, Ayesha Khatoon, a 21-year-old political science student, became the youngest mukhiya of Fatehpur panchayat under Sabour block. She defeated her nearest rival by 327 votes and prioritized issues like literacy, sanitation, drinking water availability, and road connectivity. Similarly, in other parts of Bihar, young candidates like Anushka, also 21, were elected as mukhiyas, reflecting a broader trend of youth engagement in local governance. Overall, the 2021 Panchayat elections in Bihar, including areas like Sultanganj block, highlighted a significant shift towards younger leadership, with voters expressing a preference for new faces and fresh perspectives in local governance.
