Title

“Academic Stress Among Nursing Students”

Abstract

Background: Stress is our body's response to pressure. Many different situations or life events can cause stress. It is often triggered when we experience something new or unexpected that threatens our sense of self. It is one of the common features in all our lives. Stress cause increased risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension and pain, heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep problems, weight gain, and memory and concentration impairment. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), those people aged 18-33 years old suffer the highest levels of stress in the nation. Academic Stress in today’s highly competitive world, students face various academic problems including exam stress, poor time management, deadlines, lack of cooperation from classmates, overwhelmed theory and practical hours, financial crisis and lack of care from parents. Nursing profession is a noble and disciplined profession involved in the delivery of health to the society. It is a helping profession, service oriented to maintain health and well- being of people. Stressful nursing care results in illness than wellness. Teachers should train the students how to overcome stress in day to day life. Objective: To assess the level of academic stress among nursing students and to explore the factors contributing to academic stress Methods: Analytical Cross-sectional design was used in the study. 110 nursing students were selected using census method. Data was collected using self administered questionnaire to assess the level of academic stress and factors contributing to academic stress among nursing students. Results: The result showed that most of the nursing students had low level 57.3% of academic stress. There was no association with level of stress and selected demographic variables like age, course of study, education status of father, monthly family income, type of family and area of residence. Conclusion: The study concludes that most of the nursing students had low level academic stress. Hence the study recommends it is very important to arrange some relaxation techniques at the beginning of every semester where the students will be able to learn how to overcome the stress and perform well in the studies.
