In India the Scheduled caste and scheduled tribes population has always been subjugated by the upper castes and they have been deprived of even the basic, civil and social rights which are essential for human being in the society. Efforts have been made in the past by various social reformers and rulers to uplift their socio-economic conditions. After independence continuous efforts are being made by the Government of India to uplift their socio-economic condition. There are hundreds of welfare schemes and programmes, which are at present being run by the government for the betterment of socio-economic conditions of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes living in this country. The social segregation is still a stark reality in the rural areas and also in some urban areas.
