In recent years, there is a substantial trend towards greening the industry. The need for environmental preservation and sustainability is now generally recognized. The 3 R’s (reduce, reuse and recycle) are being emphasized as a way to reduce the demand for fossil fuels. Several studies have found that increasing carbon emission may lead to the occurrence of natural disasters. Institutions all throughout the world are showing concern about the overall impact of the environmental depletion. Financial institutions and banks are also helping to streamline or improve the process of reducing carbon emissions. The “Go Green” strategy includes the green sustainable banking as a key component. Green banking is relatively new idea in the financial world that incorporates environmental factors into its lending standards. Green banking encourages eco friendly practice that benefits the environment. The paper examines and reviews the significant green banking initiatives and developments taken up by select banks in India and attempts to identify international initiatives or principles of green banking associated with implementing this eco friendly phenomenon.
