Title

GROWTH OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DURING THE COLONIAL INDIA

Authors

Abstract

Education in ancient India was provided on the basis of the caste system and under the guidance of Guru. According to the Varna order ancient scholars were educated in different areas of knowledge. Out of the four Varna orders, Shudras were denied as they hold the lowest position. The knowledge of Sanskrit during the Vedic became popularized. Ancient literature was engraved in Barks of trees and Palm leaves. The spread of Buddhism also made it possible for the establishment of several educational institutions. The Islamic tradition also contributed to the flourishing of knowledge. The introduction of modern education in India during the colonial period was of great historical significance for India. The Christian missionaries played a very important role in the development of English and vernacular education in India. Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras became the center of Western learning in the 18th century. The establishment of the printing press also contributed to the development of Western education in India. Various reforms were taken under the leaders like Warren Hating, Jonathan Duncan, Lord Bentick, Raj Ram Mohan Roy, etc., and various acts like The Indian Universities Act of 1904, the Government Regulation on Education policy of 1913, Wardha Scheme of Basic Education, Sergeant Plan of Education and Radha-Krishna Commission 1944-49. This current paper is an attempt to know how the English system of education was developed in India during colonial rule. The study was based on the qualitative method and mainly relied on secondary sources.
