Title

Review on Formulation Approaches and Evaluation Parameters of Sustained Release Tablet

Abstract

As the oral route offers the greatest active surface area for the absorption than any other drug delivery mechanism for administration of diverse medications, oral drug delivery is the most popular and practical choice. The popularity of these dosage forms stems from awareness of the toxicity and lack of efficacy of medications when taken orally using the traditional technique in the form of tablets and capsules. Typically, traditional dosage forms result in broad variations in drug concentration in the blood and tissues, which has an unfavourable impact on toxicity and ineffectiveness. For a treatment to be effective, the medication concentration in the plasma must be kept within the therapeutic range. The idea of oral Sustained release drug delivery systems was developed in response to these factors, as well as factors including frequent dosing and unpredictable absorption. The medication release rate is controlled by a variety of techniques used in sustained release drug delivery systems. For pharmaceutical technologists, creating oral sustained release matrix tablets for medications with steady release rates has always been a challenge. Water penetration, polymer swelling, drug dissolution, drug diffusion, and matrix erosion have all been used as formulation strategies to predict drug release through matrix systems. The improvement of medication therapy is the primary objective of sustained release dosage forms as determined by the relationship between the advantages and disadvantages of a sustained release system. The primary objectives of a sustained drug delivery system are to maximise a drug's biopharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic qualities utility that maximises effectiveness, minimises adverse effects, and results in disease cure. sustained release tablets ensure better patient compliance by reduction in total dose and dosage regimen, which can be of great help in the treatment of chronic diseases.
