Transformers are one of the most crucial equipment in a power system. So it should be protected from various external conditions of faults and malfunctioning. The protective system is developed around it should able distinguish faults and non fault conditions. Differential protection based systems are used by transformers for its protection. Various techniques based on differential protection are proposed in the literature. But these techniques does not provide better performance. This paper proposes a novel approach of differential protection based on covariance and CUSUM. This technique is used to distinguish between fault and non-fault conditions. This suggested algorithm has been evaluated under a variety of failure scenarios, including: (where no Fault condition like High Inrush currents, Current Transformer saturation ). Fault state, such as (winding turns faults, 3 phase fault). This method is developed in MATLAB and outcomes shows that proposed technique has produced a better response then existing ones. allowing the fault to be detected in just milliseconds after its incidence.
