Title

Experimental study on mechanical properties of concrete by partial replacement of fine aggregate with sawdust

Abstract

This project describes, the role of sawdust in the construction of practices and other structures to reduce the usage of quantity of sand by using wood waste which is sawdust to replace the use of sand. Now a day’s usage of concrete has increased widely. Sand is being used as a fine aggregate in concrete. The natural sand become increased in cost. Depletion of sand near rivers which disturbs the bed level, it may lead to uneven the surface which in turn effects the environment. There is a need to think of a usage of alternate materials like wood waste can be used as a replacement of sand. This study mainly focuses on the experimental investigation of using saw- dust as a partial replacement of sand in the properties of concrete mix. Sawdust also known as a by- product or waste product of wood working operations such as sawing, milling, routing, drilling and sanding. Saw dust is the waste material generated by wood-based industry. It is formed as a small irregular chips or small trash of wood during the operations of wooden cutting into different sizes. The dimensions of saw dust depends upon varieties of working operations. Generally, tonnes of quantity of saw dust is generated worldwide every year. Dumping of sawdust on open land is causes threat to the environment. Now a days lots of technology is used in the field of concrete technology that modifies the concrete properties. sawdust is waste which when burnt, produce lot of carbon emissions and harmful gases which pollutes the environment. if this waste is used in concrete, then there will be less emissions of carbon dioxide and gases in environment. Design mix of M40 grade concrete fine aggregate with partial replacement of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by sawdust. The specimens were prepared to study the strength characteristics such as Compressive strength, split tensile strength, and Flexural strength were studied. The strength tests were performed in the hardened state. Each set consists of 3 cubes, 3 cylinders, 3 beams. All specimens are cured and tested for 7 days and 28 days. The obtained results were compared with conventional concrete.

Key Words
