Title

Study of Existential Crisis in the novel, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Abstract

This research paper explores the theme of existential crisis in Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist. The paper focuses on the characters of Oliver, Nancy, and Fagin, who each experience an existential crisis at various points in the novel. The paper analyzes the causes, manifestations, and implications of each character's crisis, highlighting how their experiences reflect broader social issues of poverty and neglect. The research methodology used for this paper is a qualitative analysis of the text, using a close reading approach. The paper examines specific passages and scenes from the novel to identify key themes and motifs related to existential crisis. The paper also draws on secondary sources, including literary criticism and historical context, to provide a broader perspective on the novel and its themes. The paper finds that the theme of existential crisis is a central aspect of Oliver Twist, reflecting Dickens' concern with the human condition and the impact of social conditions on individuals. The paper highlights the complexity and depth of the characters' experiences, showing how their crises are shaped by their individual histories and broader social contexts. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the theme of existential crisis in Oliver Twist, both for its literary value and its relevance to contemporary social issues.
