Planning refers to a principled course of action that aims at development and public policy is the manner in which the agenda for development is identified and accomplished through streamlined and well-structured programmes duly executed by efficient bureaucracy. India has come a long way since independence and there is an urgent need to device and implement effective policies for its constructive future. While considering the types of policies and their significance, fiscal and monetary policies are formulated with long term objectives and social assistance policies that are related to education, health, employment and other social issues are of immediate importance. These policies are building blocks of a stable democratic government since they have an impact on the larger population of the country. This paper will assess the need for planning and devising effective policies, especially a standard, uniform education policy that will accelerate the development of the nation and contribute to the ultimate objectives of emerging India.
