Title

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON MENTAL HEALTH

Authors

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of people's daily lives, with billions of active users worldwide. While social media offers numerous benefits such as staying connected with friends and family, it has also been linked to negative effects on mental health. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the impact of social media on mental health. The paper begins with an overview of the prevalence of social media use and its impact on mental health. It then explores the different ways in which social media can affect mental health, including its impact on self-esteem, body image, and social comparison. The paper also discusses the role of social media in the development and maintenance of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. The paper concludes with a discussion on the future directions of research in this field and the need for more longitudinal studies to better understand the long-term impact of social media on mental health. Moreover, the paper addresses the potential positive effects of social media on mental health, including its role in reducing stigma surrounding mental health issues and providing social support. Additionally, the paper discusses the strategies individuals can use to mitigate the negative effects of social media on mental health, such as setting boundaries and practicing digital detoxes. In summary, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of social media on mental health. While social media has the potential to offer many benefits, it can also negatively impact mental health. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness about the potential negative effects of social media on mental health and promote strategies to mitigate these effects.
