Title

Measurement of Thickness of Aluminium Coating on Metal Surface using Optical Sensor

Abstract

Surface coatings are required to change properties of materials such as colour, gloss and/or Corrosion resistance without changing bulk properties of material. Generally oils, greases, waxes, concrete, lacquers, powder coatings, metal coatings, and fire-retardant formulations are used for material coatings. Spray coating technique is used for aluminum coating of metals to avoid corrosion. This is required to improve the service life of the material. It is observed that the non-uniformity of aluminum coating on the surface service is the reason for reduction in life time of material is reduced. A prototype is developed to measure the non-uniformity of the aluminum coating on the surface of mild steel. A non-contact type retro reflective optic sensor with 0/60-degree geometry is used. Coating on the surface leads to surface roughness. Different coating thickness leads to variation in gray shades of surface. Non uniformity is measured by scanning the developed sensor on identified sheet at different positions on sheet. Non uniformity of coating is measured in terms of deviation of the sensor output readings from average value over the surface for different positions.
