Title

ANGANWADI AND INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICE (ICDS): A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF UTTARKASHI DISTRICT IN UTTRAKHAND

Authors

Abstract

The current research focused on examining the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of 50 Anganwadi workers, as well as their awareness pertaining to various Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Out of the total Anganwadi workers surveyed, 42% held graduate degrees. When it came to understanding the correct amount of nutrients required for children and the appropriate age for initiating growth monitoring, 36% of these workers displayed accurate knowledge. Additionally, 44% of the Anganwadi workers knew the precise purpose behind monitoring weight during pregnancy. The study's findings revealed that it is essential to conduct more frequent training sessions for Anganwadi workers, aiming to enhance their knowledge in delivering ICDS services. A separate investigation explored the challenges faced by these workers while executing ICDS programs. Approximately 10% identified excessive record maintenance as a significant issue, while around 32% felt overworked. Taking into consideration both studies, it can be concluded that providing substantial training to Anganwadi workers in areas such as understanding the scheme's objectives, having comprehensive insights into ICDS programs, and equipping them with adequate measures to tackle challenges could be influential in successfully implementing ICDS services through Anganwadi centers. By doing so, it will ensure that these workers are well-prepared and knowledgeable enough to manage various crucial tasks such as monitoring nutrition levels for children, keeping track of pregnant women's health status, and effectively performing other responsibilities under ICDS programs.
