Abstract Water pollution is one of the critical global issue in today’s growing world. Heavy metals are naturally occurring component and present in the environment in trace amount but may cause trouble if get bioaccumulate in excess amount. Anthropogenic activities and many of the natural processes give rise to occurrence and abundance of toxic heavy metals and trace elements in the water bodies. Sassoon dock is one of the oldest dock from where variety of seafood’s are distributed throughout the Mumbai and also exported out of India. Present study was done to analyse and detect presence of heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and Cd) in the water of Sassoon dock, Mumbai which is situated at west coast of Maharashtra, India. In our study we found there were heavy metals present in the Sassoon dock water and the concentration found was in order as Zn > Mn > Cu. Lead and cadmium were found in not detectable range. The present study will aid data and evaluate the risk to living organisms in the studied water body which will be helpful for the assessment of safety for future reference as these toxic metals may bio accumulate inside the aquatic organisms and may enter the food chain.
