Title

Chitin and Chitosan: Its Review and Versatile Application

Abstract

Chitin is a naturally occurring compound that is the second most abundant biological compound in nature. Chitin is the most abundant amino polysaccharide in nature and is estimated to be produced annually close to that of cellulose. It has become of great interest not only as an underutilized resource but also as a material. New functions with high potential of in various fields and recent advances in chitin chemistry are quite remarkable. Chitin is found in many aquatic fungi and crustaceans such as crabs, shrimps, and many insects. Shrimp is behind one of the fastest growing businesses in the world. However, during shrimp processing, the hard outer shell of the shrimp such as the skin and head is removed as biological waste. The exoskeleton of this shrimp contains a significant amount of chitin. Chitosan is a biological product produced from chitin by deacetylation. Chemical or biological processes can perform deacetylation. Large amounts of chitin are treated as biological waste that can be used to produce chitosan. Chitosan is a biocompatible, naturally biodegradable and non-toxic compound that can be used in a variety of applications. Chitosan has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The purpose of this review is to take a closer look at the applications of chitin and chitosan. Based on current research and existing products, some of the new and future approaches in this fascinating field will be discussed in depth. Furthermore, it can also be used in drug delivery, biotechnology, bio nanotechnology, food technology, regenerative medicine, medicine, many industrial applications, gene therapy, cancer treatment, agriculture, environmental protection, etc.
