Title

Contraception Understandings and Experiences of Women in Bangladesh

Abstract

Bangladesh is a small country, but due to high fertility of the people, the population is huge in this country. Through last many years, population was not controlled properly. Many superstitions, taboo and religious barriers are responsible for this. Through this research, the author tried to find out what would be the exact causes which were discouraging people to adopt with contraceptive practices. As Bangladesh is a country where women in rural and urban areas still cannot take decisions on their own. They have to take permissions for any major works in the family from their seniors like in laws and others and from their husband. The study may reveal new sights of Bangladeshi culture and beliefs which need to be improved. However, the present study has conducted to find out the barriers to take decisions about family planning, to find out the influence of education on family planning experiences, to find out the influence of socio-economic conditions on family planning experiences, to find out the negative and positive influences by family members such as laws and others to take decisions of family planning and to find out the superstitions and false believes which influence on family planning. The study was conducted at nine upazila of Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh. Total sample of the study was 405. Structured questionnaire which had both open-ended and close-ended questions was used for data collection for the study. Focus group discussion with participants was used for the study. Face to face interview was also used for the study. SPSS, MS Word and MS Excel were used for data analysis. P value and, Chi Square test was done. From the result it was found that the independent factors such as high education, religious taboo, superstitions, lack of knowledge, knowledge of modern contraception, and desire for more children, exposure to media, decision makers, age, region and religion have relations with the practice of modern contraceptive methods. Lack of education, religious taboo, superstitions, lack of family support act as barriers to practice or adopt modern contraceptive methods. The result revealed that education should be highly encouraged not only to earn money, but also to gain some knowledge which will be useful for personal growth and development. Family support especially from husband and in laws should be encouraged. Desire for more than two children in each family should be discouraged. Early marriage should be discouraged. Males should be encouraged to take part in family planning.
