ABSTRACT: Zanthoxylum tetraspermum plants are distributed world-wide and are utilized in many countries as a medicinal source. One of the most common chronic diseases affecting people worldwide is dental caries, also known as tooth decay. Dental caries develops over time as a result of a complex interaction between acid-producing bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates, and numerous host factors, such as saliva and teeth. It is mainly caused by Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. The compounds present in Zanthoxylum tetraspermum has the power to act against S.mutans and S.aureus also prevents the harmful acid production. The effect of this plant on the particular pathogen are studied using methods like phytochemical analysis, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The compounds present in Z.tetraspermum which act against those microbes are identified by GC-MC analysis. The results from these analysis shows that the Z.tetraspermum plants are capable of acting against the bacteria causing dental carries. This present study shows the clear view about the effect of Z.tetraspermum plants on oral pathogens which causes the dental carries and affects the oral health.
