Title

ENHANCING THE PROFICIENCY OF STUDENTS IN WRITING THROUGH INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)

Abstract

Today, as mentioned in Alvarez (2012) “with advances in information and communication technologies (ICT), and the constant development of interactive and multimedia dynamics on websites and e-learning platforms, new alternatives can be used to overcome students’ reading and writing problems” (p.185). The use and potentials of blogs, for example, has spread to the university context, including subjects and courses that specifically focus on reading and writing skills. Therefore, it is important to introduce the notion of writing through ICT platforms. Nowadays, computer technology brings a set of advantages to promote and enhance language skills. For example, it permits learners to develop their language competences by interacting with authentic material in an interesting and meaningful way. Additionally, it is one of the tools to teach writing. ICT should be explored to nurture the habit of writing in the school. Most students who use ICTs seem not have identified the various ICT software that can enhance their proficiency in writing, probably because they don’t actually explore the ICTs for that purpose. This paper aimed at exploring the available ICTs that are useful for enhancing students’ proficiency in writing. The findings revealed that ICTs such as word processing, desktop publishing, multimedia composing, online publishing and internet communication serve as useful tools for promoting writing skills among students at all levels of education. The recommendations that were derived from the findings include among other things, that the teachers and lecturers should expose students to write through ICTs under the supervision of adults to make sure that learners do not deviate from the set goal which is writing.
