Title

Effectiveness of a nurse led intervention program for promoting healthy weight on eating behavior and BMI of school going children in the age group of 12-15 Years.

Abstract

A quantitative, experimental research approach with quasi-experimental one group pre-test and post-test research design was used for this study. The conceptual framework adopted is based on King’s Goal Attainment theory. The participants consisted of 162 children of 12-15 years of age selected by purposive sampling, The height and weight were measured using calibrated scales, and BMI was interpreted with IAP BMI chart. Eating behaviours which include food frequency, meal preference, Wardle’s modified eating behaviour questionnaire were assessed before the intervention. Nurse Led Interventions included components such as motivational interview, educational sessions on the dietary pyramid, ideal composition of meals, . Follow up was done on 15th day through the motivational interview, and post-test was conducted on 30th day to reassess eating behaviour and BMI. Data analysis demonstrated a significant change from pre-test to post-test in eating behaviours of children. Majority of children 108 (66.7 percent) were overweight, and 54 (33.3 percent) were underweight. There was a significant difference in the BMI of overweight children after the intervention (t value= 4.32, p= 0.05) and the difference in mean of 23.61 in the pretest 23.30 in post-test,There was a significant association between eating behaviour subscales with age, income and gender and there was also significant association between BMI with age of children. The study explored the effectiveness of a Nurse-Led Intervention program among school children. It concluded that nurse-led interventions were useful in modifying eating behaviours of school children and for promoting healthy weight.
