Duct of Wirsung: The pancreatic duct, or duct of Wirsung (also, the major pancreatic duct due to the existence of an accessory pancreatic duct), is a duct joining the pancreas to the common bile duct. This supplies it with pancreatic juice from the exocrine pancreas, which aids in digestion. The ventral duct persists as the main pancreatic duct (duct of Wirsung) which drains into the duodenum via the ampulla of Vater (major papilla). Enzymes active in the digestion of carbohydrates, fat, and protein continuously flow from the pancreas through this duct. Pancreatic ducts secrete 2.5 l of alkaline, HCO3(-)-rich fluid daily which greatly contributes to the homeostasis of the pancreas. Ducts are also important in the pathophysiology of the pancreas; alteration of ductal function can lead to severe diseases such as cystic fibrosis and chronic pancreatitis. So this article is focusing on anatomical details of duct of Wirsung and its applied anatomy and clinical importance.
